How do you know if journaling is for you? Here are five reasons to begin journaling if you are an entrepreneur serious about reaching your goals.

Have you ever tried journaling? It’s not easy, hey? What do you even write about? Where do you even begin? Do you write “Drear Diary” or just jump in and make bullet points about your day?

This basic skill is so daunting because we never really get taught how to do it properly.

Luckily for you, I have been doing some research into journaling, specifically as a tool entrepreneur can use to keep on top of their goals and tasks.

In this post we’ll look at the benefits of journaling and I will share with you my daily one-pager that will help you get started in journaling the things that are truly important in your business.

Why Is Journaling for Entrepreneurs

Here are 5 reasons to start journaling as an entrepreneur:

1.     A daily reminder

Yes, you can scribble to do lists and keep track of the things that would normally slip your mind. But in this context, I’m talking about intentionality. The intention behind journaling as an entrepreneur is to progress in your business and ultimately reach your life goals. By journaling daily, you create a trigger in your mind that serves as a reminder of WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. You can even go as far as writing your goal down every time you journal.

2.     Purge your mind

Through journaling, especially in the evenings, you have an opportunity to capture the thoughts, to-do’s and ideas that float around in your head keeping you awake. Knowing that the great ideas you have is safely documented for review in the morning allows you to tuck in and get that well-deserved rest.

3.     Opportunity for brainstorming

Developing ideas or working through troubling thoughts can go off on tangents like no man’s business. A journal provides you with a space to allow these tangents to develop without losing track of any ideas or solutions that come up along the way.

4.     Track your progress

This is so important! We often become so wrapped up in crisis management that we forget how far we’ve grown. Keep track of the accomplishments, even the small ones. This will inspire and encourage you on days when the hustle becomes overwhelming. Even the SkillzFinder & SkillzTrader apps were once only an idea. Look how far we’ve come. Progress must be acknowledged and celebrated.

5.     Know Thy Self

Imagine yourself 30 years from now. Successful and in the process of writing your autobiography. Or even just a year from now, trying to figure out a new problem that’s come up. Or imagine you’re trying to find your habit triggers. Your journal can prove invaluable in these situations. Like Dumbledore and his pensive, your journal can help you remember the obstacles you overcame and the journey you took. You will have a first-hand account of the adventure that is your life.

What Should Entrepreneurs Journal About?

You can have your pick of the thousands of resources available. There are numerous things to keep track of. For me, simplicity and impact is key.

I designed the below journal template for myself. Keeping up with so many daily activities is my pet peeve, so it’s essential for me to have a quick and easy, plug and play system that gets to the point.

Understanding The Journal Sections

I know it looks like a lot to fill in, but it is really simple to use. It covers all the important things relating to your current goal and is also hacked to help you build a great mindset.

Once you’ve completed the journal entry you can give yourself an overall grade for your day. The grade is based on Productivity vs Busyness. Ideally your Productivity score (ie moving closer to your intended goal) should be higher than your Busyness score (ie how much time you spent doing something).

These scores will give you a clear picture of how your time is being spent. If you’re very busy, but not progressing, you may have to evaluate the tasks you’re allowing to fill your time and delegate, stop or postpone some of them. Keep what serves you and delegate or stop the rest.

Not Convinced?

I know this may still seem like a pointless task if you’ve never journaled before, so I have a challenge for the bold.

Give this a try for a week and see if you notice a difference. Perhaps in your self-awareness, your outlook, your optimism or the progress toward your goal.

There are some things in life you have to test for yourself. This is one of them.
